Ashcroft
issues subpoenas to the unborn
- Blix Panda
Conservative judicial scholars this week called Attorney General
John Ashcroft’s decision to subpoena the unborn fetuses
of mothers considering terminating their pregnancies a “brilliant
legal move in the fight against abortion.”
“What he has done is single-handedly put a halt to abortion
in this country,” said Terry Sorbonne of Conservative Court
Watch, a right leaning, Washington based judicial watchdog. “By
naming the fetuses as witnesses he has made the mothers liable
to imprisonment for obstruction of justice.”
Selma Sanford of the pro-choice group, Maybe for Babies, said
the Attorney General’s recent tactics “outraged”
her.
“There are much more important issues the Attorney General
should be addressing. How this popped up on his radar screen as
important is beyond me.”
Sanford added that it would never stand up in court.
“The law states that a subpoena must be accepted ‘in
hand’ by the receiver. In the case of the unborn, I don’t
see how that is possible.”
Alerted to this dilemma the Department of Justice released a
statement saying they are “working out this minor flaw.”
